I had to go see my dad in the hospital and didnt get to go and was wondering what kind of times members of this forum ran Sunday?
90tsiguy
08-15-2005, 09:36 AM
Times for members of this forum were virtually non-existant. I didn't end up taking my car (suprise lmao) and Mike L. was the only one of us running besides maybe Got Lag and I know Mike L. was having trouble getting into 3rd. I think I saw him run a low 12 despite his problems though. Anyways, I'll wait for Mike to chime in, but it was an unusually low representation. I guess we were all spectators. On an upside however, it was great to see John Shepherd run an 8 second pass, and of course some of the EVO's (especially Pruven's with the badass flame paint job) and an automatic 1 g running 10flat's :beer :cool
Sorry to hear you couldn't make it, however hope your dad is doing better.

Yeh my dads ok,thank's for asking. I thought it was going to be rained out , glad to see it turned out good. Was there any problems with the track being wet? and did Mike C get to run his car?

NO! Mike C. Didnt run his car on sunday, I will let him tell everyone about it. As far as the rain, yea it did stop us a couple times for them to dry it and they did an awesome job also. I think the hole thing got done about 7pm.
And the traffic, posted in another thread was freakin bs!!! I was like why in the heck are they doing this crap LOL oh well..
I wish that Aaron Parson's aka Pavo could have seen that fast ass AWD 1g auto it ended up winning the quick 16. with low low 10 second passes. It was like a bracket car! LOL!
All in all I had an awesome time getting a chance to see all the old dsm folks, Shummy, JP, and Chad.
I am actualy thinkin of gettin rid of the mustang project and gettin back into the dsm world. My cousin has a complete 91 awd black 5 speed with a blow hg for 500 bucks so may pick that up..
Just wanted to let everyone know that I had an awesome time and look forward to seein everyone soon!!

I cracked my block at some point between the dyno and Neofest. It is currently torn down and I am in the process of throwing something together for the remainder of the season. I am pissed that I couldn't be there since there weren't any 2gs there doing shit. But, that's racing and the way things go sometimes.
Hopefully, I'll get a few issues straightened out and improve the times before the winter.

A fustrating day to say the least. The RUST RKT continued to block me out of 3rd gear, all day besides some attempts to adjust my shifter cables. I had never experienced shifter/shifting problems with the car ever since I had bought the car.
Shepherd ended up taking a look at my car at the end of the day and he said the adjustment on my cables were considerably out of wack. He made some adjustments to the shifter cables and the car is about 90% effective at pounding into 3rd gear. I'm going to make a few more adjustments later today.
He suggusted that I should buy : 1) solid shifter base bushings 2) solid shifter cable bushings 3) new shifter cables that do not have adjustment bolts 4) some RTV grey

yeah, I must say this was probably the worse shootout I've been to so far.
Starting out with NO ONE showing up at the quaker to convoy down to the shootout on sunday.
The rain and waiting for hours for it to stop and then be dried and finally in the end, most people gave up and left, so there wasn't really many cars to watch race in each category.
Then Buschur not having his cars there, putting on the show like before was kinda upsetting...(other than the evos-which wasn't his normal 8 second cars) Shep making one pass and then claiming the car broke
Almost no representation from our club this year (other than Mikey, Colt & sparky), I didn't see or know anyone else there racing from Columbus DSM. Then finding out about Mike C's car...(where's the tear smiley when you need it)
Then the fact that Kenny spent over $500 in 2 days getting his car ready to make an apperance at the shootout and not get to race...but at least the announcer said some really nice things about his car and the effort he's put into it while it drew a lot of attention, pictures and a lot of questions he was on cloud 9 even without racing it. Got some more "goodies" to add to the car while he was there (intake mani from Buschur) for the rwd setup.
Then the construction on the way home causing a backup of 2 hours in one spot.
Whew...what a day!
On a good note...at least the weather wasn't 88 degree's as they first predicted and was rather comfortable if you were out of the rain. :)

The Quick 16 wasn't as competitive as the previous year. I was able to qualify #15 with a pitiful 12.2@116 having to hit 3rd gear twice. Last year, I qualified 20 with an 11.7x and made the show due to breaks. I ended up losing in the 1st round to Curt Brown's old car that is now painted black, owned/operated by Slowboy Racing (runs 10.50's).

Sheps car never broke nor did we ever claim it did. He decided not to run due to the Atco race in two weeks. We decided to report to the tower that he's electing not to run so they can move the ladder up and get someone else into the field. Some how it got twisted that he broke.

Anytime I can drive 1 hour to the track, turn my boost controller all the way in, look hot in my racing suit, launch, bang most of the cogs, make fun of some car fags, and then drive home... it is a victory.
I'm a little spoiled from last year's streak of success, but I'm still having fun and that's what it's all about. After racing so much last year and learning my setup, I was pretty confident to tune/run the car blindly yesterday. The screen on my laptop went out and I was not able to log timing/knock.
The car is a different animal on the strip vs street. I did a couple pulls to test out the new shifter cable adjustments and the car was incredibly squirrelly in 2nd gear. I definitely miss driving fast for short distances versus driving a constant 75 mph in an Accord for 50 miles.
Mike C
08-15-2005, 01:31 PM
The traction at the track wasn't great by Norwalk standards as most everyone had launching problems. However, it does keep things into perspective to people that haven't seen many of these fast cars run. If you paid attention, there were NOT many cars in the 10s. There were many cars trapping 125-135MPH but they weren't going 10s. There are reasons for this. 1.) More and more people are running big turbos compared to the past. 2.) People are running nitrous 3.) People are running seconary methanol injection. The trap speeds are now getting inflated compared to the ETs of the past. It used to be that a 127-129 was a good number for an AWD DSM to get into the 10s. Now you are seeing cars go 11.0-11.2 at 130-132MPH.
Bottom line. Its hard to go 11s but it is REALLY hard to go 10s. Its not just about money, parts, and driving. Sometimes everything just needs to line up. Mikey is running his car hard but is getting to a point of maximizing the setup and/or the stars not aligning as well as they did last year. And so goes the racing........

Well, I got the car running the day before the shootout, so tuning and breaking in the motor were now out the window. I spent the better part of sat. night partying and trying to get the 2 stage boost set up figured out. No beans there either, fast forward to Sun.
I figured out 5 minutes before time trials I had the vac lines all wrong, so I reset them and take a guess on the boost setting. With all the issues, no tune and the inability to do so BC my logger didn?t want to work, and an ignition issue under boost due to either shitty wires, used plugs, lack of ground-or a combination there of, the car ran crappy, BUT?
The miss under boost was selective-in a gear or 2, and then the other 2 were good. I will let you see what I am seeing
Pass A-
R/t-.506
60-2.01
330-5.51
1/8th -8.29@90.1mph (bad miss in 2nd gear, almost aborted run)
1000ft-10.3
1/4mile-12..08@129.2mph
4th gear held 28psi-no miss-holy shit it was moving. Picked up nearly 40mhp in the back half.
Pass B.-turned boost down to 23psi-re-gaped plugs to try and get rid of miss fire.
R/t. .201 (pro tree oo)
60-1.96
330-5.20
1/8th -7.78@99mph (no miss at all-23psi-dead nuts with 10.3?s Talon..)
1000-9.98
?-11.803@125mph
About to pass the fucker-shift 3rd and rbrbrbbrbrb FUCKing missing again, missing into 4th and then cleaned up in the end.
Other runs were more of the same shitty crap. So the car ran poppy, but I am excited by the writing on the wall of what the car will do when I can make a clean miss free pass. Do the math (first half B with back half A). Should be interesting.
As Mikey said, just going to the track, and driving the car home is a victory! Hanging out with freinds you only see every so often is 3/4 the fun of the shootout.

There is a big diffrence in car setup's now than what you would have seen three year's ago. I agree Mike big turbo's are the thing to have now, and it seems a lot more cars are traping over 125-135. Its only a mater of time before the et's catch up with the speed's. and it does take a lot of diffrent things to go right to make them all come together. Hopefully you can get your car dialed in and make the pass that everybody been waiting for. Dan says 9's
12SecT@lon
08-15-2005, 02:10 PM
Yea,
Mike is going to have to get his 1st 1/2 down pat just like he said about the track, u have to figure that the first half of your pass is all about et. the lower the 60 foot the better the et, and lower trap's.
Mike C. is going to have to 60 foot somewhere in the 1.5's and make that dreaded 1-2 shift count and stay on boost as much as possible. That is when you will see him pick up for sure and I know he can when he gets his shifting down.

Cleveland DSM > Columbus DSM
For the first time in many years the Cleveland guys came out strong with all their daily driving project beaters. All have a concentrated theme of: light, fast, and cheap.
I don't know what kind of fog has casted over Columbus DSM, but clearly we need to pick up our game. Less talking about others cars and more wrenching and racing.

Dan,
I didn't mean to get pissy but I just get tired of the comments and expectations concerning my car. It's one thing to be John Shepherd and have people constantly commenting on your car's performance but my car has done nothing to merit anything. This is exactly why I do not try to post about my car, what I'm doing to it, when I'm going to the track, or what numbers I run. I have who I feel is the most qualified guy in the country working on my car and giving me advice so I don't feel the need to disect my car's needs with the group. I hope that doesn't appear selfish to anyone. I'm not doing it for anyone else's glory, I do it for me because its fun. I appreciate the fact that people are supportive but in the end, it gets a little distracting and doesn't keep anything into perspective.
This thread was about the shootout results (an event I didn't participate in). I didn't want to see another thread get turned into a topic about why my car doesn't run 9s. Once again, I apologize for getting nasty as I know your intentions weren't bad.
Back on topic.

Well damn I guess I should have stayed! At about 4:15 when it started to sprinkle at little I said the heck with it and packed it up and headed home. Although my last pass didn't help my confidence any, I lost traction and banged against the rev limiter three times in first gear. Scared me to death I figured damn I guess I will be getting a new transfer case. But everything seems to be ok. My best pass of the day was a 12.1 @114mph. The only thing that I know I broke was the air temp sensor for my AEM system. It was reading a good 35 degrees higher than it should. This was my first shoot out so I really don't have the perspective that everyone else does. I did have fun and there where a lot of cars to look at. My favorite looking car was Pruven's (sp?) EVO with the really trick ass flames going down the side and I am not normally a fan of flames. It was one of the few pictures that I did take so I will try and post it in the pics thread later tonight.

Shad,
As we discussed, I do not think your IAT sensor is bad. You can not just unhook it and point it into the air to see if its calibrated correctly. Have you ever noticed that if you turn your key to the on position (meaning the EMS is connected) and look at the IAT parameter, the number will be way off until you start the car. I believe the sensor needs a significant stream of air to pass across it in order for it to read accurately.

Mike,
So what do you think the issue is? I had my PC hooked up on the drive home and my air temps never went below 130 degrees? Do you think it is the new EPROM chip that I put in that is causing this? In the past on much hotter days than Sunday my air temps were only about 5 degrees above ambient. Let me know what you think.
Thanks,
Shad
BTW when I pulled out the sensor I cleaned it off with some alcohol. It did have some crud on it.

Hard to say. I would check with Dan but he may not even be using the IAT sensor feedback for anything that is effecting the tune. They only are $65 if you're really concerned about it.

When I talked to Dan on Sunday he said it was very important. We are using it to determine the amount of air that is being ingested into the motor. I ordered a new one today hopefully that will fix it. :)

sux i missed it, but i've got other racing to do...... And goin from small turbos to big ones is a huge difference. look at my car. 14b ran 12.67@ 106mph on 23psi back in the day. Slap on the 50trim and ran 12.65 @ 114mph. Made more power but couldnt use it down low, although there was that one 12.7 pass at 95mph on 3cylinders from 3rd gear on......
I think i just like the smaller turbos, i like the quickness.

I'm a little confused...I keep seeing all these dsm shootout pictures all over the net and I see buschur's yellow conquest...Was it there? We looked all over the place for it and it wasn't there when we were there Sunday. Did he have it there another day or possibly put it in away when it started raining? Kenny wanted to show his friends that amazing car so bad and it was no where to be found. :o

That was at Buschur's open house with the AWD dyno pulls on Saturday. Nobody from ColumbusDSM was there except for me and some of the Dayton, Cinci, Cleveland people on here.
That's why I say the Shootout is really everything but the race itself. I wasn't upset at all with the rainout, I got to hang with DSM peeps, talk cars, drink beer, watch burnouts, etc. :)

I'd first like to thank all of you for coming to the S.O. and to those of you who didnt trash the hotels in Norwalk.
As for the BR cars other than our EVO's. The Conquest wasnt able to make it as we had some last minute problems with her. The tube car is for sale and probably sold. You will be seeing a new pilot in that soon. It is still not completely put back together since the wreck. Body wise it is but not racing wise. Sorry for the dissapointment in not having our car(s) there to do some passes.
Shep's pass was electrifying honestly. I heard the crowd cheer a few times throughout the day but when he clicked the 8.59 they went crazy!!!!
It was good seeing you all again. Shearer, Shep, Mike C., JP, Gunner etc.....Hope to see you all again soon. I know i've met alot of new people this year but I am bad with names.
Take Care All! As long as everything gets ironed out with the police, and hotels maybe we can still have the shootout next year! Look here if you dont know for sure what i'm talking about. There is a some discussions.

Went, hungover as a mo-fo. Saw MIKE, and someone talking to him. I also saw someone holding their weiner all day. Weiner dog, I meant. Didn't talk to anyone, though. I saw Jarrod. He was cool as always. (I'm the hillbilly that hangs out with the other hillbilly that rides around drunk in the back of pickup trucks in the rain, fella)
Got tired of all the rain delays and left.
The Shepherd run was tasty. Much more fun in person than on video.
I wish I woulda saw the Pruven Evo run. The paint was tasty. What did it run??

He was slower than my boy Yusuf in his Evo II. Spanked him 2wice in 1 day no less.
Think Bast pass was 10.8 maybe?

The Pruven car has honestly only made literally a couple passes. They are trying to get some stuff figured out with it. The car is gonna be fast I can tell you that. They had some IC coupling problems on one of the passes.
Yusuf's car is pretty damn fast tho.
