last night when i was leaving b-dubs a couple guys noticed my problem of a lumpy idle...and smoke under the hood...all this started when my dipstick popped out a few days ago..smoke everywhere....put it back in and zip-tied it down..still smoking....get on here and read Mike Blacks post about the stick coming out...some guy said his did it when he used a fram oil filter...guess what i'm using BINGO!! i was told to do a compression test..when i pulled my plugs my #1cyl plug had no grounding bar( i'd put a pic up but my verizon pic phone sends it and when i pull it up in email....its a bunch of crazy characters) :cuss F the dumb sh!t....the rest of the plugs are ok....now for the compression...i'll start with #4 and go down cause it doesnt start that bad....#4-155 #3-150 #2-120 #1-35 WTF!!!!! so i'm thinking totally cooked head gasket and a good possibility of rings and maybe valves..........who knows...i sure dont... i hate it. make me an offer...or make some suggestions or post some help...i leave for school next friday and cant take down time like this :DOH

Your first mistake... you got a dsm as a daily driver.
Your first solution... order a gasket and head studs now.

My dipstick stopped "coming out". I use FRAM filters. It's not the filters. Get on with life.
I have to check my oil every fricken morning now for 3 months straight because it leaks so much from the oil pan. I guess I was getting lazy a day here or there and I didn't push the dipstick all the way back it. Now, I double check it and twist it a little bit left and right to make sure the rubber gasket seats well. Haven't had anymore problems.

FYI: fram is THE WORRRSE filter you can buy for ANY car.
They are like cardboard man.. look inside of one once.. there was like a news thing on it back in the day too.

I don't use the bottom end model of FRAM, I use the middle one and sometimes the top one and sometimes other brands...I am not sure what I've got on the car now....I know it is not a FRAM....basically whatever I can find at the local store...same goes with oil lately....I use any brand and almost any weight that I can find in my garage. Hell, When you lose 1/8-1/4 quart a day, it don't really matter anymore.

Fram probably doesn't have the best filtering properties, but i'd be willing to be they have better flow than some of the "good ones." I've used them almost exclusively since i've bought my car. Just the generic $3 tough guard from auto zone. Recently I tried the tried and true Pure One, and it appears to have given me a wee bit less oil pressure than before. I dunno. I doubt there's a big difference, and whatever was going on probably wasn't the filter's fault.

i still have some more stuff to do like check the oil and see if its milky looking....but doesnt 35psi in the first cyl seem a lil low for just a gasket???

Pour a cap full of oil down that spark plug well and recheck the compression. If it comes up, then its your piston ring.

Metal head gaskets are a no no.
You should get the head redecked and polished to a NICE SMOOTH finish if your going to use one. If you dont, its possible that it may not seal.. giving you some horrible compression and leaks.
I would get a stock one if I was you :thumb

got everything apart today and saw my worst nightmare....piston 1 has seen better days...not horrible but not great either.....cant find any noticable imperfections to the old head gasket.....but....MY KNOCK SENSOR WIRES WERE BROKEN!!!!!!which means no timing being pulled and one broke ass car.....sweet, i'm just gonna put everything back together and hope it runs better...if not, i'm trading it for a 93 turbo civic....we'll see how it goes but i might not have a DSM in a few days
