Does anyone here get invloved with this? I did several years for a while back when it was just Seti and I had RoadRunner and a somewhat fast computer for that era.

Now with my newly built computer and new hookup with DSL I am back on this kick again. It's a way of volunteering minus that awkward human social interaction.

I was thinking about setting up a ColumbusDSM team.

What is SETI@home?

SETI@home is a scientific experiment that uses Internet-connected computers in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). You can participate by running a free program that downloads and analyzes radio telescope data.

What is Rosetta@home?

Rosetta@home is a scientific research project that uses internet-connected computers to predict and design protein structures, and protein-protein and protein-ligand interactions. Our goal is to develop methods that accurately predict and design protein structures and complexes, an endeavor that may ultimately help researchers develop cures for human diseases (See the Human Proteome Folding Project, a collaborative effort to apply our software on the human genome). Our project relies on individuals, like you, who donate time on their computers to collectively provide the computing power necessary to further develop, test, and improve our methods.

You are basically processing data for these scientific research studies using your own computer. When your computer sits idle, the screensaver kicks in and starts to process the data for them. You get chunks of data, your computer processes it, then it sends the results back to them.

I had done it for awhile... seti that is since 2000 or 2001. I really dont like it now since they switced to boinc instead of the old stand alone seti@home thing... if your an older user you'll know what i mean, it had the grapical interface etc.

Do you get paid for it? If I'm going to do anything for scientist that make millions I want paid?? :P

No! You are volunteering to share your computer resources. Everyone benefits from these things. Maybe a cure for cancer or aids might come out of all these computations. You never know.

Scientists do not get paid millions. Chances are, whatever they discover while on the clock becomes property of the company that they work for.

I guess your salary depends on what kind of sceientist you are I suppose.

I might check it out.
