Sounds almost like the cat is clogged up. That seems weird on a car of that age, but that's what it sounds like. Either that, or someone jammed something in the tailpipe. That would account for the glowing, or if the motor is not firing it is dumping fuel into the exhaust which is burning in the cat. Make sure it has spark, and make sure the exhaust can flow freely.

Gunner's on the right track. Something like that happened to my folks car years ago. Cat pooped out, killed O2 sensor, car ran like crap and wouldn't rev up.

Ive seen new cat's on car's fail within' a day or 2...Also...the block that's in the cat might of came loose from heat and pressure and maybe cloged up a resonator....hit the bottom of the cat when its cold to see if your can hear it clunking around in there...
