ok i know there was a post a while back but i cant find it. anyways my friends car had 0 compression in every cylinder. he took it apart thinking it was the head gasket because all the timing was good. the thing was the first day he got the car took it out started to get on it and it just died. the actuator did not work and open the wg. any one have aony ideas what it could have been. he may sell the car to me but i would like to know what im working with. he dosent want to deal with all the problems. its a 91 talon tsi fwd
thanx

First off the waste gate has nothing to do with the car not starting. The reason it won't start is because they timing belt broke. This is also the reason the car has no compression. If the valves are stuck open no compression can be made. Also the head gasket has nothing to do with the timing. They head gasket may had been fine. If you are going to buy the car you are looking at replaceing the timing belt, tensioner, head gasket, and pistons rings at least. However, since it was a timing victum it may need new valves and pistons if the valves hit the pistons. Also depending on how hard the valves hit the pistons it could had distroyed the head. You need more info.

i know haw the car works and how the rebuild goes, and no the belt did not break all that is fine its brand new. the actuator did not open the wg which had mass boost creep which killed his car. belt is in one piece, took off head, gasket is fine, engine is torn apart well head is off the block and he told me that the head looks good just trying to fine out what it could be. i know what happens when the timing belt break went through that before with an 90 awd. the question is what the problem could be if the timing belt did not break and every thing looks good

Honestly, I had to read that 3 times to decipher it.

I think you are suggesting that the WG didnt open under boost and the engine died. So obviously this would suggest that you had some massive detonation... in all 4 cylinders though. Not buying it.

How bout you tell us what happened before it died.

Yeah. Ken is right. I must have no idea what you are trying to say. Use full sentences and punctuation. Read your post back to yourself before posting it.

ok he baught the car took it for a test drive. went out to a country road took off really slow then got on it half way through third gear the car died just shut off. he got it back to the house did a compresssion test 0 compression in every cylinder. checkted the timing belt was fine its brand new. so he took the engine out to do more investigation. he thought every thing looked good. so he thought it was the gasket took engine apart new gasket nothing wrong with it. before he took the engine out he checked the actuator with an air compressor did not move. so he tried to find out what else is wrong with it. he hasnt messeed with the car in about two months and said that he would sell it to me. i planed on rebuilding the engine any way if i got ti because mine is about to take a dump. need any more info let me know

ok so the actuator that "doesnt work" created 0 compression in all cylinders even though he was pulling through the gears slowly.

He had 0 compression in ALL 4 cylinders and thought it was the head gasket. (Wrong answer)

My honest and direct answer... You guys used the compression tester wrong or the timing belt skipped a tooth.

i dont understand how it could be a timing problem if the timing belt did not break. you guys all know if the actuator does not open it will have a significant amout of boost levels and power. what kills the engine when this happens. i know it can detonat.

he took off slow then started to slam the gears. i dont think did a compression test on three talons. could have jumped time but the timing belt looks fine

the other two cars came out fine. im just lost all together :(

belts will skip and be fully in tact. (your definition of "fine"

you would have to look at the timing marks not just the belt.

if timing is off enough (correct me if I am wrong here) that could/would severely throw off compression readings.

Well if the timing is off enough to love tap some valves, that would deffinately skew some results :thumb

Pull the head, check the valves out. Blown HG wouldnt cause 0 comp in all 4 cycls

Man I know this post is old but it is about my car. this is what happend, so anytime this may happen to someone else. I got on the car hard the car had a new timing belt and new head gasket on it it was the fault of the ppl I bought the car off of. the replaced these and did not replace the balance shaft belt so to make a long sotry short get on it balance shaft belt breaks and smack the timing belt out of wack skips time and pistons come up and crush the valves I found this out after ripping the head off and seeing small nics in my pistons and then inspecting the head with a flash light seeing that the valves are bent there it is the whole problem.
now the car is on the road and I have 100 miles on a rebuild and it is strong no more balnce shafts for me and im ready for much more things with my new baby sending a tranny to shepard soon then im ready for the boost I prepared my bottom end for thanx for you input on the the rest of the post guys later.
