Stop the presses, Mr.Shumway...do not continue with that 2G block that you have....

I've learned my lesson now.

Mike, I've been meaning to ask you but never did, did you use the original oil pump? Replace it with Mitsu? Aftermarket? I've been doing some researching and some people point the finger back to a failing/bad oil pump.

Ill tell ya one thing... my car hasnt been the same since I added that damn 15w50

It ran FINE before.. now idle drops when I clutch in to the point of near stalling.. oil light comes on and off all the time..

Out if goes this weekend... in with some 10w30

dino 15w 50 or synthetic? Synthetic tends to be a little thinner, moving a little better I think. Only time I ever got an oil light with 15w50 is when it was about 30 degrees outside.

Time for an electric scooter Mike. :D You could mod those.. Put some more winds on the magnetic motor..

I think if anyone is going to figure out just how to avoid it, you'll get it eventually. Sucks though man.

Wait, NO, it can't be....Mike your car walked again? This makes what...#3? I thought you modded it so it wouldn't happen again....I'm not understanding this....

I have the original oil pump....it's really just 2 gears that mesh together. I did not see any noticeable wear on the gears or the inside of the housing. If it "failed" then I would expect some major damage and seized timing belt. According to the needle on the dash, my oil pressure has been higher than it ever was before I did the rebuild.

I was worried about the crank though. There was notice-able wear on the part that touches the thrust bearing. There were grooves worn into it like an old brake rotor. Maybe it needs to be perfectly flat to create a film of oil to protect the bearing. I would have needed a new crank to cure that.

Maybe I needed to do a proper prime of the oil pump to get oil up into the block for the first start. I did generously coat all bearings everywhere with 20W50 oil as well as the inside of the oil pump. I cranked my car for about a minute straight before it started. There was no gas in the fuel lines anywhere which is one reason it took a while for the fuel pressure to build up.

I am still thinking about replacing just the thrust bearing and maybe throw in that "cad kit" to see what it will do. I am open for experimentation here. What we learn about my car will help others. Maybe we can save the 7-bolts!!!!

My engine does not tick yet. When I took apart my engine back in December, my crankwalk was measured at 0.020 in.

Mike,

You are welcome to follow my steps :) The 350Z is very attractive too, slap a supercharger there and get about 370hp at the rear wheels. And the kicker is, it's reliable ;)

from http://www.magnusmotorsports.com/crankwalktheory.htm

Then there was that 93 1g that came in with a low oil pressure complaint. After checking it with a mechanical gauge and finding it to be too low, we took down the pan and began to check out the engine. The oil pump was found to be bad, the rod bearings seemed questionable, and the crankshaft endplay was .010".

Also, Mike, remind me. What was it you did with the oil squirters. Did you get rid of them completely, or did you have the block machined to accept 1g squirters? I can't remember, but I think you got rid of them.

I got rid of the oil squirters. The first time I started the car, the oil pressure was so high I was scared. I see this every morning when I start the car. It does come down a little (at idle) when the oil warms up.

I thought Tom bought a Corvette Z06. You mean he has a Nissan 350Z???? I am not as impressed now.

no, Mike, he said you could go his route, OR go for the 350z.

So Mike, are you getting rid of your car or you going to the the Lippian/O'Connell move on it?

Might as well keep experimenting. Haven't destroyed anything yet. Next up: www.crco.com dowel kit and a new thrust bearing. While I have the oil pan off, I can re-bend it and fix that oil leak.

How tight are the main and rod bearing clearances? What was the thrust bearing clearance? The fact that the crank had a small groove wore into it where it rides the thrust bearing bothers me. It seems like the crank is made from sub-par material and allowing wear to that surface causing the crank to walk.
