You are looking strictly performance? SS S/C with the factory stage 2 kit. The car handles quite well, and is fun to drive. Not near as fun as my DSM, but it is fun.

FYI I don't have the stage 2 kit, but my friend that works at the dealership drove the one they had on the lot with the kit installed, he was impressed with the power.

http://www.leftlanenews.com/2006/04/06/gm-announces-superchargers-for-cobalt-ss-ion-redline/

The Stage Two Kit (P/N 17803229), with an MSRP of $750.00, yields more power through the middle section of the power curve versus the Stage One Kit. The Stage Two Kit includes the parts available in the Stage One Kit and adds a smaller supercharger pulley and drive belt, pushing the engine alive with 241 hp and 218 lb.-ft. of torque across a broad engine speed range.

For the money you are looking to spend based on your poll.

C5 ZO6
Evo
or an 03 or 04 Cobra

Stay away from the Audi S4, turbo's are VERY well known to leak oil... to change them the engine gets pulled, and you ain't doing that in the driveway, also the turbo's are around 1k a peice :confused

Asking who buys used cars anymore is like asking why one wouldn't throw money out the window....Depreciation...Having worked sales at a new car dealership, used sell like 4:1. Especially when the economy is as fragile as it is. Getting people to commit to buying a 30-40k dollar car is a nightmare right now. At least if someone can lease, they can save on their monthly payment that way...assuming they fall within the basic criteria. i.e. low mileage etc.

This was what i was going to ask. what are your plans for the car? Daily driver, new toy? 20k on a new toy is alot of money to spend, but its your money.

I would stay away from the S4 if its older. they are nice cars but maintenance is crazy expensive on them (as previously posted) and if its a daily driver thats an issue you'd have to be concerned with. I personally would go with an srt4, you could probably find a newer one for far below 20k.

oh and i dont think ive ever seen a C5 ZO6 for under 30k, or a cobra for under 25k. And again, if this is a daily driver, you wouldn't want either of those for year-round driving.

Have you thought about a WRX?

The thing that's nice about a new car as a daily is you don't have to work on it. :) That's why I went for a new car, I already have a car to work on at home with my dsm, I don't want another one. Something breaks, take it to the dealer.

yeah i wouldnt buy a new car, i work at germain chevy and know how new car sales and deprication affects the cost of the car. But i dont want a c5z06 1 because insurance im only 18, and an srt4 is only $10 more a month for me right now. the cobras are cool, i had an 04 mach1 and would rather go that route but i really want to stay away from the v8 scene. just because of gas reason. What i really want would be a 4 cylinder car, thats why i threw in the srt, cobalt ss, and ive even been thinkin of the s2000. but i want to stay below 20,000, 20,000 is MAX. and i would prefer a tubo car as seeing how i have a gvr4 and love the turbo aspect, but i dont know i test drove a s2000 and loved the handling just not the motor because i really had all the power from 6500rpms to 9k.

and the evo in my sig. would be the one i would consider buying, just because i know everything about the car.

Get a CPO BMW 3 series. You can get a warranty up to 100k miles. It won't necessarily be as fast as an SRT-4/EVO/etc, but it will be a well balanced high quality car. BMW's bodies are extremely rust resistant and the interior is finished with top-notch leather (not that plastic coated junk found in DSMs).

BMW motors will last a long time if you take care of them. Keep up with your car's inspection schedule. Now, the inspections can be expensive, but BMW only uses timing chains which offsets the typical user's $800 60k belt change (or lack thereof).

Or, if you are daring, buy a slightly higher mileage used one without warranty. Pay cash and carry liability. I have NO regrets as of yet. Parts are within reason and relatively inexpensive (IE: OEM oil filter is $7.00, Plugs ~$3.50ea, air filter is $15.00 & etc). It is the labor that way out of line.

Be prepared for stupid stuff associated with German over-engineering. Like issues with the lighting control module (yes a damn computer controls all the car's lights), window regulators (no mechanical arms, a nifty easy-to-break pulley system), CATS, and the million sensors (like the airbag seat sensor that measures weight to determine if someone is in a seat or not to only deploy the airbag if someone is sitting there).

i have an 87 bmw 325i daily driver with 200k and it runs perfect. and with that in mind i want something other than bmw, because i already have one.

Since you already have a good daily driver, get a 78-83 911sc. It has the N/A 3.0 flat-6 and galvanized body panels, so rust is a minimum. I do not think I will be going back to non-Euro cars after owning the Audi and 5-series though. I love being able to hit 100mph without a bitch and the car be whisper quiet and smooth as silk.

With that said, after I finish my master's degree in spring, my next toy car will be an e34 M5 with a 6sp.

You can find 89-95 e34 M5's ranging from $10-17k. In the high-12's to 14's you can get one with ~100k miles. I found one for $13 with only 61k, but it is a 1991 and has the 5sp. This video (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8071895731410147277&q=e34+m5&hl=en) is pretty funny of a 1,000hp+ e34 M5 screwing around and can't keep his wheels from spinning on the straight away. The company that did the car also has a 7 second 1/4 mi e34 m3 that they drag race in Norway.
