ok So justin calls the house last night at 12 and we proceed to push his car home(was just around corner). He had gone through a huge puddle/small lake on the road home. Car stalls. He tried cranking it once on the road (no go). After gettin it to the house we pull the plugs and crank her over as to se if any water had (hydro-locked) <-john...
No water at all looked good...so we put plugs in and she sputters and fires up after some cranking...runs like ass for a lil bit then smothes out..and then it pops kinda loud. we shut it off to check for any leaks..none...we fire it up again...now it has a knock almost like a rod.
so today...jusitn and i drain the oil...pull the plugs agin..pull off the oil pan...all looks good. we are about to check for spun bearings. we already checked for CW...still good there(for now). so if the brearings are good what would cause a knock like that?....
also we did a comp check to see if we cracked a ring or sumptin...
130 180 170 170. ~ so #1 is pretty low. we may order a new set of rings, HG, oilpan Gasket, and timing assy (cause its at 87K with orignal TB).....

my questions are could this all be the bearing we are about to check?..
Could the ring cause a knocking sound?
could it just be a blown HG?
could it have jumped time?
What else could it be?

did you check the timing yet?

It's much easier to measure crankwalk with the oilpan on. I'm am not sure what to attach the measuring device to (that is within reach) if there is no oil pan on the car.

JP, did you check the turbo like we initially thought? He was kinda high-ish in RPMs when it snapped/popped. I say check it for shaft-play because we know that his turbo was going there for a while. After that, I'm at a loss. I'll think on it on the way home.

1.Turbo is fine
2.We checked it for CW (thanks Mike), and I'm within spec......0.008.
3.We took off the oil pan and cleaned it (water was inside)
4.Oil change, drained coolant
5.Took old shitty turbo off, new FP series bolted on
6.Water poured out of the intercooler pipe, so I have to drain that out more tomorrow.
7.We checked the bearings in cylinder #1........its ok, there is a little wear, but its all good

Right now, we're gonna put fresh oil in, hook up the new turbo, and slap on the new stuff sitting in the basement. We'll hopefully have it running by friday morning.

Did you guys go over the timing yet? The knock, and that loud pop could be valve related, ie. valve hitting piston, or a bent valve that isn't sealing. This could be a result of a broken timing belt, or if the motor was hydrolocked it could have done it, perhaps even caused the timing belt to skip when it locked up. I'd hate to see something go though that new turbo and mess it up. I'd get to the bottom of things before bolting any new parts onto the deal.

Yeah I wouldn't put a sexy new turbo on until you know whats wrong. I'd check all the timing marks and then I'd pour some oil down the #1 plug and redo the compression check and determine HG or ring.

did the oil check....compression didnt come up at all. chekcing the timing today....then possibly gettin new HG.

we put a cap full of oil down the #1 cylinder, and the compression stayed the same

we won't actually bolt the turbo up until we know what's wrong

I like to post at the same time as my ghey roomie...

You could do a leak down test to determine the source of the problem without installing the turbo. Or you could install the OLD turbo instead of your BB turbo that cannot be rebuilt.

timing is fine, now its upto the car gods to hope it runs without the knock before I finish everything else.......if it knocks, its probably a bent or stuck valve. If it doesn't, the 6-bolt project starts early, I baby the car until the 6-bolt is done, then swap it out.

Ok, new update. After lots of hard work at the house, we finally got everything back together. We took off the valve cover, the cams turn perfectly and the valves are not bent or stuck. We re-attached the cover and bolted everything down. Timing, again, was ok. We put the 3055 on with the Tial WG. We put all the lines on, oil in the car, and started it up..............

IT RUNS! No knocking, no ticking. It was louder than hell without a downpipe, but it doesn't tick or knock. So, tomorrow I'm going to start cutting the donut and piecing the downpipe together to get welded. After it's all welded up, we'll take it for an easy drive. If I don't have any problems, then we're slapping the 650's in and starting to tune. Hopefully by the meet on Tuesday, I'll have a nice, shiny turbo that will spank all kinds of stuff running well. Here's to hoping.......
