Well, heading back to COLS in the AM. My work is done in TX. I have a 3 week layoff then heading back. Taking the Evo to Quantum on Monday. Just thought I would ask again about cams and thoughts about them. Going with HKS 272/272. Heard a few things about ticking and noise, rough idle, and such. Feel free to chime in.

Also - S-AFC. Keep it or upgrade to S-AFC II, or other?

I would keep the AFC. The AFC2 is not worth it and I think its a little harder to tinker with the controls on the fly compared to the older setup. The 272 rough idle stuff is very overhyped IMO. It was a problem with the VPC cars especially but really shouldn't be that bad. Like I said though in the other thread, I wouldn't personally run a 272 intake cam with the stock turbo. As long as you're upgrading turbos, which it sounds like you are, then I would do it.

PS... Make sure you put Loctite Red on those adjustable cam gear bolts :huh :D

Oh one more thing Steve. Buschur's EMS setups are going so well on the EVO that they are now shipping out preloaded units ready to drop in based on mods. There will be some fine tweeking but they are offering email exchange of datalogs and then adjustments made by Tym at the factory based on those datalogs with updated files :D

Standalones= Fun :)

i remember when mark's car had 272's on it
:huh

the idle was pretty bad when it warmed up

I would go with the 264's or maybe 264/ 272 setup

but you can ask mark and see what he thinks

Thanks for the info guys.

I was waiting for Buschur to come out with the EMS deal ! ! Looks real tempting but I will see what the next few months show as far as funding.

I hope that the guys at Quantum would know to put locktite on the cam gear bolts. :D :huh

Looking into Buschurs turbo kit. Might as well stay with their whole setup. I got just about everything else you could get from them for the Evo. :D

Suggestions on future upgrades? I have a few things in mind.

I went ahead an installed the injectors. Simple job. Anything that I can do now to save time and money is a plus I suppose. :thumb

Steve,

What size injectors did you go with?

I have the Walbro pump sitting on my coffee table, but I have not got injectors yet.

660cc injectors. If you plan on installing the injectors yourself here's a tip. When you remove the plug from the injector be careful. It's not you normal clip in plug. There is a metal staple that fits on the outside of the plug that basically holds the plug to the injector. These little suckers are a bitch to get off and put back on. I put a thin layer of silicon on the front of the plug where the metal staple clip is after secured in place. This will insure that it will not move out, which I doubt it would be just to be on the safe side. The reason why I did this is when I took off the plugs I sheared the teeny tiny lip that holds that stapple clip. I couldn't get it off with out doing so. Maybe others will be more successful than me. But everything is secure and running perfectly. No leaks. Quick job aside the little bitchy clips. 140mph on Alton Darby last night at 1AM. <stupid>

You can go aheaqd and install the fuel pump. I had mine in a few months ago and got the injectors a few weeks ago. Didn't have time to mess with them until now. I was going to let Quantum install them but I got bored and it was easy.

Alton Darby is a nice stretch to do 140 on, I know that much.

Also, my 13 year old mitsu' wannabe has those bitch ass clips. I hate them too. :rolleyes

did you tune them at all?

if you didnt you must have been running really rich

I didt to an extent. It doesn't seem to matter what I do with the S-AFC this car still runs rich as hell.

Calling you guys in the AM. Check your PM. :thumb

Let me rephrase, I KNOW the guys at Quantum would use locktite. :thumb

Hope you guys can lean this bitch out a bit. :D

The Loctite thing was a joke and was not directed at Quantum. I have just happen to have read about 3 counts of cam gear bolts coming loose and thrashing heads lately :)

Just got back from Quantum. Met with Mark and Bryon. Cool guys, helped me out big time. Kick ass facility, lots of room. Took a peak at some other Evos in there. Damn ! ! Nuff said.

Thought I should share what we are going with:

HKS 272\272
Fidanza adj. cam gears
Injectors - 660cc - (already installed)
Perrin short sifter w/ bushings (installing myself)
Oil catch can - (breather filter getting to oily - installing myself))

Thanks again Mark and Bryon. :beer

Got the car back tonight thanks to Bryon and Mark for getting it done fast.

I understand you guys tuned the car rather conservatively so there is room for adjustment, correct? I'm new to these cams and have never been in an Evo with these HKS272's but I noticed that the BOV is more pronounced when shifting. It almost makes a completely different noise than stock. This is what I'm hearing, yes? The car vibrates a bit more at WOT than stock. I should have asked Mark before I left tonight what to expect as being different from stock so I wouldn't be caught off guard. :p

I also need to get that catch can, I forgot it.

Thanks again guys, I'll be back. :thumb

:p

I was out driving around and now it sort of sounds like something is loose, like sheet metal hitting something. Might be my exhaust, and it realy makes a loud whinning sound in the upper RPMs in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. I assume that's normal?

Mike C

Hard to say without hearing it. Cams are not going to make the car whine or anything like that. Come to the meet tomorrow and we can take a look :)

Your timing belt is too tight.

And yes, It's happened to me a few times. (surely not on an evo of any kind, ever) :thumb

Went to Quantum and took Bryon for a ride. It's normal. I just wan't used to the new noise.

Where and when is the meet again?
