Hello all,
As I mentioned in a previous post I have been away for a while due a procedure and post op infection. I'm still recovering and have not been able to touch my 91 GSX for a while. I have part piling up and need help from fellow DSM'ers getting things going again. I would like to drive my 91 before winter if possible. I can pay each person that helps a little bit of $ if needed. I don't have a lot and the work shouldn't be crazy but I can pay some. I'd definitely provide beverages and food as needed. Here's the list of what I need done.
Car Details:
91 GSX AT
Rebuilt motor with 2g pistons/1g rods, ported/polished head (otherwise stock)
full 3 inch turbo back exhaust
Real Master Power turbo (not ebay) T3 flange
tubular manifold with External WG
2g MAF with intake pipe
FMIC with really crappy piping (I will likely change this if possible by mid Oct with better FMIC)
Walbro In tank Fuel pump and bosch inline fuel pump (poorly done but I'm not worried about this now)
A/T Trans with only 44k miles no mods
770 Fuel Injectors
EProm with burned chip
EProm TCU no mods
2G big brake upgrade
Eibach Springs and KYB shocks
HKS 264 cams
Greddy Electronic Boost Controller
S-AFC II
Problems with car....
I've posted about this before but the moron before me that owned this ran the car with two brake proportioning valves causing car not to stop hardly at all
Moron also ran some weird stereo wiring that needs cleaned up
Stereo does not output sound (I believe because the previous owner had amp/woofer and ran the internal speakers off the woofer)
Brakes/pads need changed
There is an oil leak that apears to be coming from the oil pressure sender but I'm not sure
No front license plate holder
Really crap tint job that is too dark for Ohio and needs removed
There is an idle surge which may be related to boost leak. Previous owner supposedly checked the ISC and CAS but they could probably stand to be rechecked
Here's what I need some friendly help with. I will help as much as I physically can but may be limited due to health.
STM abs delete kit installed to eliminate dual prop valve and clean up engine bay.
Extrude Honed Intake installed with Magnus gasket
New powerslot rotors and ceramic pads installed
Paint calipers (no comments just trying to clean them up)
Wheel stud on rear passenger side fixed (should be easy)
Install amp to see if that fixes audio problem
Fix oil leak if possible
Install Wideband O2 (Innovate LC-1)
Install front license plate bracket and plate
Install DSMLink lite and get basic tune (I have chip installed just need to reinstall ECU and TCU.
Check over wiring possibly and clean up if needed. (this may be fine and nothing need done I just want someone to look it over)
I may be missing a few little things but that seems like the majority of it. I don't have a ton of tools but enough to do those things I believe.
Please respond to this post if you can help and are willing. I am looking at some weekend in mid-October to get the work done. I think if there are a few hands that can help it could be done in a day easily. Hopefully by then I'll be recouped enough to help. I may also have a few parts to add to the equation by then but nothing major. I think the oil leak may be the most difficult thing if it is front case thing. If so, I'll take it somewhere once everything else is done and I can drive it on the street.
Thanks for the consideration fellow DSMer's

BTW - I live off Sawmill and Billingsly and the car is in a garage by my apartment.

Thanks my friend! I am willing to pay people a little bit of cash to help. I can't give each person $100 but more than $20. The more people that can help the quicker things get done and the easier it is. I'd rather pay you guy and save some money than pay a shop.
Besides I don't know of any shops locally that would do all that without charging me an arm and a leg. I also have the issue of getting the car there legally. The tint is too dark and I can't mount a front plate at the moment.

The easy part is removing the window tint. The hard part is removing the sticky stuff left behind. Maybe there is a special chemical that will remove it? Does anyone know? I think I tried lighter fluid on mine and it did not work. I may have ended up using something like "Purple Stuff" and lots of paper towels.

I bought a big bottle of special remover from an auto parts place and also a hand held steamer. I read on the net that if you get the window really warm with the steamer and use the chemical/scrapper that it comes off easily and with little/no residue. It supposedly peels right off and the scrapper will get any glue left.

Roll the windows down and throw the plate in the dash. Not entirely legal, but shit'll hold...
I've had to peel tint off and used Goo Gone to clean up the residue. It's still a PITA, but works. I wouldn't risk it with Goof Off. You only need to remove the tint on the (front) door windows as the other glass (aside from windshield) could be spray painted black and still be legal. I've not dealt with rear glass aside from small stickers and that's a bitch to get off while keeping the defroster intact.

Awesome to know! That won't be too hard then if I only need to remove the front windshield and door tint. There's only a small strip on the windshield and the door tint is peeling some already. That should be much easier now. Thanks for the info!

FYI technically front plate on dash is not legal. Found out the hard way it has to be fixed to the front of the vehicle. Even better is that the meter maids down town can write no front plate tickets if you are parked on public property. Found all this out the hard and expensive way.

unless things changed, it doesn't have to be fixed to the front of the vehicle. It just has to be "fixed" to the car facing the front. You could bolt it into your dash if you wanted to. I actually had a cop tell me that one when I got pulled over for no front plate. It just can't be sitting in the dash.
Funniest thing I ever had happen was I put it up there when I saw a cop once, forgot it was up there, then took the turn onto an on-ramp too fast. The plate went sliding across the dash, and went right out my open window. And of course I was doing about 40 going around the corner, so I had to stop and walk back to get my damn plate. Pissed me off at first, then I couldn't stop laughing when I pictured it in my head going perfectly out the window without hitting a thing.

Thanks man. I hope so. I think the only thing that could turn into a big hassle is the oil leak. I don't think it is serious but I could be wrong. If that turns out to be the case I'll just take it to a garage if I absolutely have to. The rest of the stuff should be pretty seemless to do.

I had an oil leak from my oil pressure sender. I replaced it and it stopped. I believe Ken, Iwishiwascool, had the same oil leak problem on his 2G as well.
(Well, it stopped one of my oil leaks. I still had an oil leak elsewhere.)

This is actually my inexperienced theory on where the leak is coming from. The previous owner has an oil pressure gauge on the car and obviously has messed with the sender. I can't find oil anywhere else by visual scanning. Do Autometer Phantom Gauges come with an aftermarket sender unit or does the gauge just work in conjunction with the OEM sender? Sorry for the dumb question.

I think it depends on the gauge, but mine had it's own sending unit.

99% of the AM gauges come with their own sender thus people either tap into another source on the ofh OR just tee if off the stocker

I wonder if the moron who owned this before me tried to install the new sender. It did look like a fairly new sender that looked a little different from the pics of the DSM one. Would the AM sender fit in a 91's space at all? That may explain the whole thing... (let's hope that's all it is) From looking at the sender it looks like he just ran the electrical wire to the sender. That's why I'm suspecting that maybe he used the AM one.
Thoughts anyone?

Most AM senders will not be the same thread as the OEM unit/hole. There's usually an adapter of some sort, which makes it twice as likely to leak if not installed properly.

Ok guys. I just added a few parts to the list to add if I we have time. I'm going to exchange out the FMIC on the car (the piping is really really bad and poorly done). I got an old school Buschur Race FMIC with short route piping. We may not be able to change this out due to the turbo. I need to rotate the compressor housing to face down.
I am also not going to be switching to the extrude honed intake. I just picked up a barely used JMF race sheet metal intake. I will also have a 70 mm throttle body here in the next two weeks as well.
I also picked up a high stall torque converter and a trans cooler. This doesn't have to go in that day. I am not sure if anyone is confident in changing these so we can wait on this.
The main goal is to get the car stopping and running correctly. (i.e. brakes, prop valve/ss kit, oil leak and the little things) If we can get all the stuff done that would be great but it depends on who can help and how many people.
I have October 20-23 off to work on the car so hopefully one of those days will work for those willing to help. I am betting I'll have to pay to get the torque converter installed but hopefully one of you will know how and be willing to help.
Thanks everyone!

I'm thinking of saving the bigger stuff until later on seeing as there is likely not going to be a lot of help. I'm thinking that the weekend of 22 is definitely when I'll be working on it. I really just want to get it ridable and then maybe do the difficult stuff in the off season. So revised list of what I would like to get done:
Oil leak figured out and fixed if possible.
New Brakes/Pads
STM ABS removal kit install
Tint Removed
License plate added to front
Switch to Extrude Honed Intake if possible (time wise)
Install Innovate WB O2
Install amp and debug wiring/radio issue
Remove AFC
Change Plugs (wires are ok)
compression test
Install DSM Link Lite V3 and get a decent base tune
I could really use the help with the wiring stuff and the intake manifold the most but any helping hands would be very welcome and I'd give a little cash to those who help.
I'd love to get the torque converter/SMIIM/short route Intercooler and piping/Trans Cooler/DSM Link SD set up installed but I may just wait and pay a shop to do those things later in the winter. I'd love to just have a drivable car for a while.
Thanks all!

You going to install new rotors with those pads? and is this all for all 4 wheels or just fronts? I recommend lubricating the slider pins too while you have it apart....with the special slider pin grease.

Ok guys... well an update on this since the week is here... I am changing up a little as I have been approved for a loan on an Evo... (I'm super excited)
The list of things to do is shortening rapidly as I am likely going to end up selling this car. I would like to get the brakes stopping properly so installing the STM kit is the thing I need help with the most. That and cleaning the dust off from it sitting in my garage. It's one hell of a clean car. If anyone is interested hit me up. I'll attach pics of it clean. Keep in mind the issues I listed. None are major but will require work. The interior carpet is brand new with new headliner, the paint is only a couple years old with minor dings and chips. If interested let me know and shoot an offer.
Can anyone help with this on Thursday, Friday, Saturday (I'll be available any day listed except Saturday around noon to 2 or so) of this week?
I am going to leave the tint and license plate issues for the new owner. I will likely have some items for sale once I get rid of the car.
I'm going to wait to buy the Evo or anything until I get a good ride in this thing once the brakes are safe.
Can anyone help install the STM kit and maybe peak at the oil leak during the days listed above?
Thanks,
Pavo

Oh and the motor is 2g piston, 1g rods with around 10k miles on motor, ported/polished head (otherwise stock) with small leak as mentioned, trans only has 44k on it and is super clean. Tons of mods to list. It is EProm and socketed with chip, EProm TCU (not socketed) tons of other stuff. I'm not looking for a ton. Just enough to pay off my DD that only has 8 months of payments left so I can get the Evo... You won't find a deal this good if interested. Shoot me an offer....

Given the cleanness (is that a word) of the car I'm hoping to get $3,500 OBO or I'd take less if someone took it as it sits and they fix the brake issue. I'll compose a list of modifications. I also have several parts sitting there I'd be willing to sell at a little discounted rate to anyone who would want to buy with the car. I'll try to post all that shortly.

Ok here is the car as is sits right now in no particular order....
91 GSX A/T
Modiciations:
Shortblock has 2g Pistons on 1g Rods with less than 10K. (no receipts for this but I bought the car through Import Tuners in Florida who actually performed the work and verified all of this)
ARP Headstuds w/Metal HG
Ported/Polished Head with HKS 262 Cams
Timing Belt/Water Pump done at same time as motor build
2g MAF with Recirculating Intake pipe
Master Power T4 T70 Turbo (turbo # 810015) Non Ebay and Legit Turbo
T4 Manifold with External WG and EGT probe
Custom O2 housing
3 inch Turbo Back Exhaust
Custom FMIC with 2.5 piping
A/T Trans with around 44k on it. Shifts great with no issues
250 Walbro in tank fuel pump
Bosch 044 external inline fuel pump
780cc Fuel Injectors
Aeromotive FPR with gauge
Greddy EBC
Turbo Timer (don't recall brand at moment)
SAFC II
EProm ECU socketed with custom chip
EProm TCU (not socketed)
Boost, AFR, EGT, Oil Pressure, Battery Voltage Gauges in car
Pioneer speakers and head unit (head unit isn't the best)
New Interior and Headliner
Customer Black with tasteful blue flake paint done when car motor was done
17 inch MSR Wheels
Eibach Lowering Springs, KYB AGX Shocks
2g Dual Piston Caliper Fronts
I will include front and rear strut tower bars for no additional cost.
Those are the good things and I may be missing some details. Car drives well and pulls hard.
That bad:
As mentioned in this thread the previous owner ran an idiot rigged abs removal. That is why I have the STM kit. I have hard lines for abs removal and there is already a non abs prop valve in the car. I will include the hard lines for free if someone takes the car as is. The car stops but barely because of the multiple prop valves and extra hard lines.
Small (only a few drips) oil leak around the sending unit
The keys that were included when I bought the car are copies and don't always engage the ignition when turned. It sometimes takes several attempts to get it to engage and the car fires right up.
There is an idle issue when in park or neutral. It surges around the 1000 rpm mark up and down and is annoying. It stops the second the car is put into drive or moves forward.
Needs one lug bolt replaced on rear driver side. I have several I will give to buyer just to have handy.
Things I'm fixing tomorrow and Friday:
Lower driver side trim inside the car where the hood latch is at is getting the peel.
Radio will not output sound because it needs an external amp. I have one and will hook up but it may need additional wiring as I'm no stereo guy.
Car needs washed.
I need to put the ECU/TCU (pulled to verfiy EProm and socketed), some interior trim pieces back in the car and also replace a few bulbs for the tail lights.
I need to reconnect a few intake hoses.
I'm going to drive it around a bit.
I may be missing some things but I think I got most of it. I think my price is fair considering the mods and cleanliness of the car. The car could be parted out for more than the asking price easily. I will list out the parts I have sitting ready to install in case someone is interested in those.
Thanks!

Parts I have ready to install:
Sinister Speed 10" Torque Converter lightly used. Normally over $550 new plus core - $425 This is good for a 5100 rpm stall. I will also include a free external trans cooler with sender and gauge
Old School Buschur Racing FMIC used with 2.5 inch turbo side piping for down firing turbo and custom 3 inch side that goes to intake manifold all short route piping. Tapped with bung for SD. This works well with an S90 Throttlebody. $450
1G ECMLink Lite, chip, cable, clutch cable, SD set up with two MAP sensors, IAT sensor, and custom plug and play cable for 1g MAF adapter. (chip set up for stock 1g set up but can be modified within link program), I do not have CD with this but you can download off site for free. Link and SD set up new - $400
JMF SMIM used with S90 Throttlebody (S90 throttlebody is brand new never opened). $650
Extrude Honed Intake Manifold - $100 clean 1G intake manifold, I will include Magnus Heat Barrier gasket never used with this free
FP 4 inch Intake Pipe with 4 inch K/N Filter Non Recirculating, was going to use with SD and ECMLink - $100 Brand New Never used or opened
Powerslot Slotted Rotors Front Rear, Hawk Front Brake Pads, larger 2 piston rotors and pads for front, normal 1g rears/pads. These are brand new never used and paid over $650 for entire set up. - $550 or will take $50 off if bought with car.
STM ABS Delete kit 1g- $175 Brand New (assuming this isn't put on car)
BPR8ES plugs (4) - New $10 or will throw in with car purchase.
I think those are all the things I have lying around. Plan was to go Speed Density with ECM Link and short route FMIC with high stall converter. so I bought parts accordingly.
I will discount things slightly if bought with car. Prices are also OBO.
Thanks!

Essentially... lol
The Evo has always been my dream car. I've made enough money to afford the payment on one for years I just didn't have the credit until now. I want something fresh that I can call my own and do things slowly. I love DSM's without question but the Evo is calling. Believe me it won't be long before whatever Evo I get is faster than what I have sitting in the garage that I'm selling.
