View Full Version : evo RS?

GSXLR8

this may be old news that ive somehow missed out on up to this point but some kid here at work is telling me about a cheaper evo that will be called an RS but have the 4g63. it will have less flair (no wing, cheaper stereo) and probably many other things but will be priced to compete with the cheaper wrx's.

any word on this?

Shearer

It's true. As far as I know it's a bare bones model. No AC, no radio, no P/W, etc etc...

Starting price of $26k from what I hear, still to damn expensive.

BlackEclipse

hope it spits out 300HP at the heels too.

We're only talking about a 150lb reduction in weight from the regular evo and the RS. That's about it.

suicidalsquirrel
11-12-2003, 12:06 PM
the Evo RS looks too much like a regular lancer. I saw one with the low spoiler, I didn't like it. If you're buying an Evo, you want to have it look like an Evo.......its the cheapo model, and just like everything else, you get what you pay for.

BlackEclipse
11-12-2003, 12:09 PM
no wing = SLEEPER

people will think you are a dork in a regular Lancer...then you blow their doors away

sort of like what the Galant VR4 did back in the day

evilevo
11-12-2003, 12:12 PM
True, but there is a big difference between sleeper and just plain ugly. Not that the Evo is a work of art or anything. :D
It just doesn't look right without the wing or the smaller one. You look at it and say "something is missing."

GSXLR8
11-12-2003, 12:16 PM
imho, if a wing makes or breaks the look of a car, it must not be that great of a looking car.

*bracing myself for the flames*

if I were to buy an evo, I'd be very tempted to get the one with less options....the money saved could buy you a wing (if you really wanted one) and more go fast parts.

If you're looking to make a race car out of an EVO, that's the platform to do it on. I think that is Mitsu's target with this car. Something for the club racer or drag racer and you don't have to hack up a low $30k car to do it.

1lowDSM
11-12-2003, 03:40 PM
actually thats not true at all.... there gonna make another one with out the 4g63 its gonna have the 4g64 and if you guys rember thats in the nt spyder motor... there building the car to compeat with the si's svt focus and cars like that its gonna be FWD and the hp figures do not look to shabby... supposed to run high or mid 15s outta the box..

Silverevo8owner
11-12-2003, 05:32 PM
the RS will not have AC, power windows, power door locks, radio or speakers, wing, noise reduction material, and it WILL have a front LSD.

26k for one

available only in white or red

OWNDJOO
11-12-2003, 06:41 PM
well, the Ralliart one is the one with the spyder motor. 160+hp. but i haven't heard anything about an EVO yet.

why not put a EVO wing on the RS, hell it cant weigh that much.

GSXLR8
11-13-2003, 10:50 AM
well they probably opt not to put it on there because it is carbon friber=expensive therefore lowering the overall cost.

koritina
11-13-2003, 10:54 AM
There's gonna be so many wrecked Evo VIII's w/ wings by the time the RS comes out that if that's the only thing keeping someone from buying it, go to a junkyard and get a wing. :D

honestly dont think its worth it for only saving 146lbs -- just my opinion

just buy the other one and roll in style

GSXLR8
11-13-2003, 11:16 AM
but a savings of 4 grand! think of what you could do with 4 grand to that car. if you want style, like shane said, go get a wing from a junkyard and paint the mirrors to match. an aftermarket stereo would be more "style" anyways and you could get a whole lot more for your money.

Iwishiwascool
11-13-2003, 11:21 AM
and the rims are different i bet.

and no a/c

intercooler sprayer?

If im buying a brand spankin new car... i think id want to dabble a in a lil bit of luxury

Iwishiwascool
11-13-2003, 11:22 AM
race seats still?

Its the attention to detail that makes the evo so desirable...

GSXLR8
11-13-2003, 11:26 AM
I was wondering about the seats myself but then again...those can be bought too

Iwishiwascool
11-13-2003, 11:27 AM
but at what point does the cost and time consumption of buying everything the RS lacks = the extra cost of the real evo?

suicidalsquirrel
11-13-2003, 11:32 AM
each Evo seat is 3k from the dealer

GSXLR8
11-13-2003, 11:34 AM
I guess it comes down to personal preference...I myself, would rather have an aftermarket stereo system, wing from a donor car, and a nice set of aftermarket seats if seats are different in the RS

having a "true" to me is like wearing designer clothes...who cares.

it would be like dogging talon owners or 95-96 owners who convert to 97+ bumpers....it's all the same

high estimates on the cost to bring an RS up to par:
wing ~$1000
paint the mirors ~$300
seats ~$1200

and you still have 1500 left to drop into stereo

jplong
11-13-2003, 11:35 AM
how bout the fact that the RS isnt turbo...LOL

ucsigep
11-13-2003, 11:36 AM
The RS is an intercooled NT? What's the point of the FMIC?

GSXLR8
11-13-2003, 11:36 AM
is it or is it not? if not, then end of story but I didnt get that from the article unless I read it wrong.

ucsigep
11-13-2003, 11:39 AM
exactly. The picture in the article has a FMIC, and the article doesn't say they took out the turbo...

jplong
11-13-2003, 11:40 AM
i dunno but i read somwhere it had a boosted HP of 190 from the oz rallys 140~...if its turbo its a lame bitch

11-13-2003, 11:41 AM
Exactly what I was thinking Ken. If I'm going to loose money on the car as soon as I drive it off the lot, I want it to be a joy and a comfort when I drive that car.

Iwishiwascool
11-13-2003, 11:42 AM
no, the RS is a 4g63 16g

ucsigep
11-13-2003, 11:43 AM
jp, did you read the article yet?

We drove several Evolution and Evolution RS models back-to-back on the big track at Willow Springs in the California desert, where speeds of more than 100 mph are the norm for most of the course, and we couldn?t feel the difference. The RS?s limited-slip grabbed better going into some turns, but the rear wing starts generating downforce at 86 mph, so the non-RS felt a little more stable in the faster sweepers.

jplong
11-13-2003, 11:46 AM
k im thinking lancer rallyart....not RS...

GSXLR8
11-13-2003, 11:51 AM
to everyone their own I guess...I'd get more comfort out of knowing I saved over 4k and could buy more comfort later that day.

koritina
11-13-2003, 11:57 AM
The stroker kit for the "new" 4g63 is $4000 (about). There's the savings. Evo with "sleeper" look (big deal) and 2.4 L Turbo.

GSXLR8
11-13-2003, 12:01 PM
4g63...hence.....it is not a 2.4

koritina
11-13-2003, 12:12 PM
Sorry, 2.3L after stroker kit from Toda. +50 HP (supposedly)..

GSXLR8
11-13-2003, 12:16 PM
ohhh I misunderstood what you were saying, shane...I thought you were trying to say that the RS came with the stroker....my bad

koritina
11-13-2003, 12:21 PM
It's ok. All I was saying was take that $4k, throw it into the engine via the stroker kit, more power, same price. :thumb

If it came with a stroked 4g63, I think there would be no question about which one to buy. :D

GSXLR8
11-13-2003, 12:27 PM
I agree...I'm still not able to grasp how others see it worthwhile to let that 4k go into a wing and some painted door handles. the only thing I would have a problem with is lack of power windows (not mentioned in the article but mentioned elsewhere)

it amazes me what marketing can do....if the RS was released first, people would be saying IT was the "true evo" and calling all those who buy the one with the wing "ricers"

personally, it's already a 4door...you might as well go all out sleeper style

ucsigep
11-13-2003, 12:30 PM
lack of power windows (not mentioned in the article but mentioned elsewhere)

from the article:
Mitsubishi trimmed 146 pounds of ?nonessential? items from its already-stellar Lancer Evolution for even more performance. Those items include the wing; HID lights (replaced with halogens); rear wiper; air conditioning; ABS; power motors for the windows, doors, locks and side mirrors; the entire audio system; trim in the trunk; vanity mirrors; rear assist grips; map lights; lots of sound-deadening material and even that little piece of leather wrapping that goes around the parking brake lever.

It was mentioned in the article. Drink another beer... :beer

146 lbs = not worth it -- ride in luxury baby :thumb

koritina
11-13-2003, 12:32 PM
:thumb Personally a radio, ac, and power windows are useless.. Power windows may be nice on a 4 door just because it's not "easy" to roll up or down the back two, but that's the only thing I see usefull about power windows.

But the Mirrors and Door handles are JDM yo! :D

Iwishiwascool
11-13-2003, 12:32 PM
i dono.

I would definitely want the bells and whistles when im spending that kind of money.

And the rims for that matter.

just go on a diet and then u would save some weight -- i mean shit -- its still gonna be around 27k -- and whats a new one 29? holy shit -- either way u are gettin raped by the dealership -- so if thats gonna happen -- just buy the "luxury" one and take what u want out -- and shane -- the whole damn car is jdm!

ucsigep
11-13-2003, 12:41 PM
rear wiper, a/c, abs, gone. Cool. Basically, everything they take out would be cool with me, except I would still want the wing, I would want the HID lights, and power windows/locks/mirrors. I mean, I don't like leaning clear over to roll the window up or down. Only way I would not have those is if it's a race car, not a daily, or even semi-daily driver.

true -- i was just being a smart ass -- if anybody i would need to lose some weight -- i probably weigh just as much if not more than damn near everybody in here -- but f it -- i dont care, im not buyin a evo so i dont care about the 146 lbs that u will save w/ the RS

i would walk into the dealer and ask them to take everything from the front seats back, OUT they can sell that bullshit to someone else... then pull up to a nice looking evo.. and... :confused

Too bad we'll never get that car into the US. Strictly for off road.

"US inquiries; at this time we are not able to sell the Evolution VIII.5 MR to clients who
wish to use the vehicle for on highway use. We have a petition into the US DOT
and NHTSA to allow this vehicle to be sold to US clients for legal street use. "

We can only hope.

My thoughts are if I'm spending that kinda money on a brand new car...it better have all the luxury items on it...I'm not about to live without air... All I've heard from Sam from the beginning is "who needs air", but yet which car was he driving when it was 90+ degrees out this summer??? (The only car in our family with air) :thumb

BlackEclipse

neither of my 2 cars has "working" A/C on it.....I have found out that a 4-door cars are much better in the heat because you can roll down the back side windows which helps to circulate the air better. And it you have a sunroof that is even better
