My brother-in-law owns this car. It has a 4.9L V8 with a Garrett turbo on it. The turbo sits on top of the engine. What is this Gerrett turbo? Anyone? Is it similar to the T25? It looks kind of weird because the center section is kind of wide. It had an internal WG but I could not tell where the BOV was since it was attached to the side of the carburator. I wonder what the HP and torque numbers are for this car.
His car is white with T-tops and the eagle on the hood. The doors have words painted on them letting you know the date of the race that it was the pace car for.

My brother-in-law told me that 1981 was the last year of the turbo except for a single year, 1989.
But....I thought a co-worker that I once worked with had a light blue one from 1983 that had a turbo on it.
I am not sure what to believe.

Does he have that sooper-duper boost gauge? The one that is outside the car, sitting within the hood "scoop." It has 3 LEDs which progressively light up once that baby is spooled---GVR4 style ;)

Hey google searcher, that is the WRONG Trans Am. That is the 20th anniversary one. I am talking about the one WAY back in 1980.

They're garbage.
The 301 would make a better paper weight.
The reason you couldn't find a BOV is simple, there isn't one.

A wastegate doesn't relieve boost pressure...
When there is no BOV, the pressure forces the turbo to back spin (compressor surge).
BOV's really aren't needed for automatic cars, as boost doesn't fall off between shifts. Supposedly compressor surge can break shafts (on small shaft turbos) but I've never seen it happen ? and if you're running a turbo small enough to have the shaft break, it's time to go bigger anyway. :D

Lots of cars in the 80's had turbos without BOVs. The Merkur has a T3 turbo and no BOV. I've upped the HP on mine a bit and havent added a BOV yet and I can now hear compressor surge between shifts. I've never heard of a carb'd car with a BOV but to tell you the truth I havent ever seen a car'd car with a turbo in real life. Sounds pretty slick.
