View Full Version : Strange Electrical Gremlins

A long time ago, my 97 TSi started doing something strange. I know why my CEL is on, straight pipe; however, that has nothing to do with the intermittent, sometimes flickering but always on battery and brake lights. I have changed battery, and it is the reason I swapped to the 90 amp galant alternator. Has anyone else been attacked by this gremlin? The car behaves normally, it's just those two lights are on. They sometimes flicker in sync with the engine rpms. If anyone has a clue, let me know.

Well if it flickers with your RPM's then its most likely your alternator. Mine did this, and my lights came on about 2-3 weeks before she died on me.

Isn't the alternator, the old one was tested as good, the new one (90 amp Galant) was tested good. It usually doesn't flicker, but if I do not drive the car for a few days, they may go out for about 15 minutes of drive time before they're back on. When the car was down for a weekend for the 14b swap, I started it up, no lights, drove it from Utica to Mount Vernon, and by the time I was in my driveway they were back on again. Before DSM.ORG crashed, I was looking through the archives for an answer and found none.

So, if anyone else has any ideas, let me know...PLEASE! I don't want to go to some auto electric shop and drop $300 just to find out something silly.

Even if they test good... it don't mean they are...according to autozone ive had 4 "good" alts. so far, and all of them were bad under the heat of the motor, and oil getting into one of them...

Heat and oil will break down an alt under hot/high rpm conditions...

Interesting, cuz I have been on this Galant alternator for over a year, and the only problems are the battery and brake light on my dash. I have also heard that the other warning indicator lights on the dash are tied together, and come on together. I am just lost. Oh well...
