Today was the 2nd time in 2 weeks that my dipstick has popped out and blew oil all over the engine causing smoke to roll out from the edges of the hood.

I check my oil every morning before I leave for work. I was thinking that maybe I wasn't pushing the dipstick all the way down. This is not my original dipstick. I bought a new one 2 years ago. The dipstick fits kind of loosely anyway.

Can I get new O-rings for the dipstick??? Do you think I wore them out checking my oil so often? Do I need to crimp my oil dipstick tube too? Maybe I need to find some aftermarket rubber o-rings that are thicker and will hold it better.

All I know is that it makes me extremely nautious breathing oil fumes while driving.

...and not to mention the embarrassment of the smoke rolling out from under the hood when I park it at work. I hope no one calls the fire department....... What am I thinking....this is Columbus...the city that doesn't care.

that's okay, I can't check my oil right now, my dipstick is broken, still in the tube. Hopefully I can pull it out and get a new one soon...

Did you replace the dipstick Mike? I think at some point those dipsticks all just start blowing out. My friend's did it a couple times. He replaced the dipstick and hasn't had a problem since. They are like 7 bucks up at Dennis.

typical reason for that is bad rings....but don;t jump to conclusions.
this happened to me last fall right before the meet at nat. trails.

what I blame in my situation is the fram oil filter...it is domething that I had just put on my car ...prior to that...always ran OEM filters....after, I run OEM ones again and haven;t seen the problem since.

some people cannot get around the problem and their cars still run fine...slightly crimp the tube to hold it in or ive even seen string to hold it down. Just keep in mind..this is a mask for covering up a sign of other potential problems.

You can just get a new dipstick from the dealer.

Mine blew out once..and i noticed how loose it was in there.
A new one fits 10X more snug.

High crankcase pressure is usually the cause. I would definitely buy a fire exinguisher. If oil sprays on the manifold it could very easily catch fire. It is a common problem with DSM's.

Yeah, that fire bit is scary. That happened to me once and I about sh!t my pants. Oil sprayed up on the hood and dripped down onto the manifold behind the heat shield. Luckily I caught it early enough that I was able to blow it out.

I am not too worried about the oil catchin gon fire....oil tends to "smoke" and smolder more than ignite into a fire.....now a gas leak is more scary....gas will definitely ignite into a fire

Did I mention that I also have a gas leak as well?

My car may be in flames any day now.

I got mine at Walmart for around $15-20 too. If you look through the old Talon digest and around on the net you would be surprised how many DSM's catch fire from oil on the manifold. 3 weeks ago we had a guy down here catch fire because a cam seal was leaking and the timing belt was throwing the oil around. It ran down the inside of the hood and on the exhaust manifold. Caught fire quick. It took 2 of the big extinguishers from a restaurant to get it out. Better to catch it early.
