Here's a question i have been pondering for the longest of time, How much work is involved in doing an engine swap? I have a 95 talon ESI, and if i could get a turbo engine, what all has to be changed beside need a bigger exhaust, header, maybe a high flow cat, and of course the motor mounts?
How much do motor mounts cost and having them installed? Would i need to reprogram the ecu? Would it be too difficult of a job?
I would seriously love to do an engine swap, but i wanted to ask you DSM guru's whats your take on this? Is the project worth it? or should i just build up my non turbo car?

Swapping a 4g63 into a car with the 420a is not worth it. If you really want to go turbo either buy a gst or gsx or buy a turbo kit for the 420a

So if swapping the engine is not the way to go, then lets look at this situation another way. I would like a turbo in my car, but i don;t want crazy amounts of horsepower, i am more or less looking to increasing my non turbo engine more than 200 horse. Turbo would be sweet to add in order to gain this.
Having pipes welded and made are no problem, i know a guy who will do it for free cause i am a friend of a friend, and he wants to help me build the talon up. He did all the welding and piping work for his street cars in Nevada. So i pretty much have the hook up on any custom work involved.
So where should i look first... should just buy a bolt on kit and have it installed? or should i find all the lil stuff i want and build my turbo system up from there?
p.s. so many questions to ask i need to sit down with you guys and just shoot the "crap" about cars sometime. :)

if you are going to just "bolt on" a turbo kit then you are wasting your time. It has been proven time and time again that you FIRST need to build up the internals of your engine before you even think about bolting up that turbo.
If you only want a little over 200 HP then why not just go buy a stocker 2G FWD stock turbo car? You might be able to pick up a good used one for less than 4,000 dollars. If you are worried about high insurance costs then pay cash for it and only get liability insurance. You gotta keep your eyes open and look for the deals. Then after you find one check it for crankwalk.

I agree with Mike. If you are going to turbo the 420A, then you NEED to also have upgraded internals. Even well tuned turbo 420A's are melting/cracking piston rings/lands. If you are really serious about turbocharging your 420A, plan to spend about $6-8K. If that's out of the question, then I'd recommend looking into other options: 50 shot nitrous, buy a 1G, stroked motor.
I'll put it this way, for the amount of money I've invested in my car I could've bought two 1G AWD, and have enough mods to run low 12's.

I had a non turon and i used a 40 shot of nitrous and it was fun while it lasted, but unfortunatly a shop up here in toledo scewed up my headgasket and i had to get rid of the car. Eventually i got a TSi AWD. But if i could do it all over agin i would of just kept the car stock, and pimped it out, and enjoyed it

well i c where you all are coming from, maybe i would just like to build up my engine some then, like clean under my hood. I am willing to get new forged internals if its worth the shot? One thing i want to do is port and polish the engine block, who in Columbus does stuff like that? how much would that run me?
Is the 420a block big enough to make the displacement any bigger? maybe get the cylinders bored out bigger then get new internals and have an engine block that has alil more horse?
p.s. again, many questions, lots of options, thanks for the posts guys, i appreciate it

howell automotive makes 2.2, 2.4, and 2.7 stroker kits... thats what i will be doing (2.2 or 2.4) its the whole block with forged internals, biult up everything... but like they say: Turbos... the replacement for displacement

you should do some research on the subject, my suggestion is to check out www.2gnt.com and if you can get it read Maximum Boost by Corkey Bell..i'll sell you the book for 15 bucks if you want it..lol
you have a lot to learn it looks like...you'd be porting and polishing the head...the block of the 420a is a single cast iron piece and is very strong..i'm throwing close to or alittle more than 300hp right now..Kon has done the same thing, dyno proven...the engine could really use larger intake and exhaust ports..i'd recommend doing so...if your are going to turbo it you WILL HAVE TO put in forged internals...why drop 3K on a turbo kit to run 7 psi? just read 2gnt until your eyes hurt..you'll learn everything you need to[/url]

I think that Jay still has all of his stuff for sale. You could turbo your car for a nominal cost. I dont know how much of it he has sold, but I know that he still has the 8 injector setup. You should get with him.
