Ok, I've had a really bad oil leak for awhile now (read: always). I've replaced the oil pan gasket, tighted down the oil filter bolt, replaced the valve cover gasket.
I was thinking about it today, and would it be possible if a certain balance shaft plug bolt were "missing" that oil might be shot out of the resulting hole?

Also, anyone know what those "vents" on the tranny are for? They are black rubber boots that are basically vents.. I'm missing one.. :cuss

Those vents you are refering to are just that.
As pressure builds in the trans or tcase it is vented via the black rubber piece.
It can also let in water if your car is ever submurged up to that point.. hence the reason lots of trucks use tubes and bring them up to a higher point on the truck.
You REALLY need to replace the missing vent piece, you DO NOT want any particles to fall inside your transmission :D
Best advice is to clean the area like you already have, and run the car, get underneath and look for leakage

No leak at idle, as far as I've been able to determine, if the car is sitting still, it doesn't leak.. Which sucks.. Need an AWD dyno..
Hopefully I'll be able to actually look under it when we replace the ball joints and do an alignment while it's on the lift this weekend..
Anybody have extra tranny vents?

that bolt most likely isnt missing, it could be the HG, the head, rear or front main seal...obviously its blowing out under boost...
you have a catch can? see if that contains oil after you drive under boost...
theres alot of things that can leak...

Not much oil in the catch can.. Just a bit from that one incident... :confused
As far as the bolt not missing, I'd be willing to bet it is, as I have 4 bolts in the TC, 1 in the Axle mount.. I hate people.. :cuss
We've also re-tourqued down the head, ala Mike Black's suggestion, which resulted in not much change at all..
My thoughts are the rear main seal, if the front were out there'd be oil on the timing belt correct?

under the timing belt cover usually... did you check the cam seals? maybe your rings are bad and your getting a lil blow by, but its burning... indicating the white smoke from the exhaust?
if you block the intake pcv valve on the manifold and run that line off the valve cover into the catch can with the other line, you will be able to tell if there is anything leaking, (look at the timing cover by the next to the head, it may start leaking there) because you will get alot of white smoke after boost, or even on start-up. dont run it like that for long though...its just to check...
