Anybody bought one and have thoughts? I'm looking at getting one for a few reasons.

1) long trips (especially on the bike), would be nice for areas I'm not familiar with (and small enough to rig up a mount on the tank).
2) riding quads in the desert, it's pretty easy to get lost out in the dunes when all you see around you is sand.
3) off-roading in the mountains, for basically the same reason as #2 except you just see mountains with mines in them instead of sand.

So far I haven't found a whole lot of reviews on line, but what I have read it seems that the Magellan SporTrak Pro might be the way to go.

plus one.

you pretty much just listed all the reason's why you want one, so buy one. Price, and brand name are ok to go off of. Might want to try consumer reports also.

Magellan is the best out there. Can't go wrong with em. My brother has one and loves it.

My boss got one and he thinks it great. He is always talking about it. He even started posted the longitude on his web site for trips that he takes. I don't understand the big hype. I have a good sense of direction and realy don't see the need for one. I guess when my folks took us camping and I went out for hours in the woods, I always knew where I was. I have a built in GPS - Gary Positioning System. :D

friend of mine has a Magellan he uses on his Goldwing. This model wouldn't fit on a tank very well.

I'm usually pretty good, as well. Running around in cornfields helped a lot. The thing is, when riding up and down, jumping dunes, just general mayhem, it can get confusing exactly where you are. The other thing that would be nice is so we can mark certain spots when we're off-roading in the mountains so we can find them again more easily. I've noticed it's a little tougher out in the desert or in the mountains. I was always able to find my way through woods back in Ohio.

Plus, for riding long trips on the bike to new places, it would be nice to have a map. :) Also, I know of people who do this (http://www.geocaching.com/), which you have to have one in order to do. Your boss might enjoy that kind of stuff.

Is that the handheld Magellan? The one I'm looking at is just a bit larger than a cell phone, as best I can tell. http://www.magellangps.com/en/products/product.asp?PRODID=11

No, sorry I didn't see that part on the header. He bought his 5 years ago.
