Came home today and I could hear the sump pump running kind of loudly as soon as I stepped into the front door. I thought it would stop any second but it never did. I went downstairs and found the float was hung up between the pit wall and the pump. It may have been running for hours today. I unhooked the float and it shut off. Then ten minutes later it got hung up again and the pump wouldn't stop running.

So, I went and bought a new sump pump. I figured the life of this 7 1/2 year old one has been severely shortened today. At the rate the water was going into the pit, I'd be screwed if the pump failed. It is suppose to be non-stop rain for the next 2 days. This old pump was one of the cheap models anyway. I think it is already 4 1/2 years beyond the warranty.

I got the most powerul pump they had in the store. It's one of those 1/2 HP lifetime warranty ones with a stainless steel casing. Now the water shoots so hard out from the curb that it hits my neighbors house across the street.

I didn't get pictures of the final installed pump (yet) but I did take pictures of the new pump while it sat on my dining room table. :D

At least you have a sump pump. I just have a laundry drain.:( I had about 3" of standing water in one half of my basement. Try getting rid of that with a wet vac:mad:

You can install a sump pump. You need to cut the concrete and dig a pit. The pit is a big piece of plastic. Then you just throw in the sump pump and route plastic pipe up and out of the house. You could blow it into the yard or dig a trench and run pipe out to the street (if you have gutters that run underground pipes out to the street).

Did the water come "up" from the drain? If so, then you need to have a one-way check valve installed on that drain.

If this flooding continues, then installing a sump pump is my next big project for the house. The water came in through the base of the basement walls.

My brother-in-law's house flooded while it was on the market to be sold. Luckily they already moved into their new house in cincy so not a whole lot of personal possession's were destroyed but it filled the finished basement (which cost's 15k to build last year) and covered ALL of the carpeted flooring on the first floor.

b/c no one lives there anymore it wasn't caught right away and was too late to save. the insurance adjuster hasn't given them a final quote yet.
