Been a long time since I have been around here, but you guys seem to know a good deal about DSM's so I figure I would try here.

My buddy just bought a 2003 Evo with 8000 miles on it yesterday, only mod is a K&N open filter. About 2 or 3 times a day when he is slowing down for a traffic light or stop sign and goes from 2nd to neutral the second he pushes the clutch in the car will just die, anybody have a simialr problem or heard of other Evo's doing it ? Once he restarts the car it is fine for a while.

I bet the BOV is vented.

Does he have a aftermarket MAF pipe too? The KN filters I believe have been know to cause that problem. Put the stock airbox back on and I bet the problem goes away.

The design of the MAF pipe has been proven to be critical on the EVO. Buschur recently redesigned his MAF pipe because of this problem. What MAF pipe is on the car?

I just looked under the hood, the bov has a tube on the end of it routing it back to the pipe, its a blue samco (sp?) hose going back to the pipe, I am not sure what the aftermarket map pipe's look like but it remesbles every stock one that I have seen. Its the stock plastic bov, he wants to get the forge valve for it though. So would getting the BR map pipe fix the dying issue even though its not vented ?

Check the condition of the honeycombs on the AFM as well. From what I've encountered, it's the open element/cone filters somehow causing a disturbance. The EVO's AFM seems more tempramental than a DSM. For shits and giggles, I took off my filter/airbox and exposed the AFM entirely to the surrounding air while on the dyno a few weeks ago--lost about 5 HP...

I would say put the stock air-box back on, if the problem keeps happening, then with the stock airbox on!!! take it to a dealrship. They will have to cover it.
