Everyone remember the guy with the red firebird and his friend with the 5.0?(really cool guys) Since all of us had our cars running, we decided to go out and race some. Ive allways grinded into 2nd some, and i now know the ACT 2100 is a peice of junk. 1st race i launched and he got me by a couple cars. 2nd race i get him off the line and pull 1/2 car in first, 2nd WILL NOT GO IN. I get pissed cause i cant hit 2nd and ask to race agian, this time from a roll, 2nd grinds and doesnt go in again. I pull of to the side of the road, and it wont go into 1st or 2nd at all even with the engine off. So now im blocked completely out of 1st and second. I call SUPER MAN (jamie) and i go over to his house at 2:00am and we look at it. Hes sure its internal, and probably the 1-2 shift fork and/or the shift
?rod?. So i am going to start pulling the ic pipes, drain the tranny, ect tmw, and start to pull it with jamie on sunday. Ill probably end up doing the syncros, the evo III shift fork from TRE, either an ACT 2600 or just a RPS 6 puck disc, as well as all shifter bushings and a short shifter. DAMN...there goes all that money i just had. If any one wants to come out, and start on pulling it in my garage tmw, let me know.

sounds like a fork or rod to me, too. Have fun, I may join you on Sunday if you like, I want to see how to tear a tranny apart. :) Mine is partially apart, I wouldn't mind rebuilding it myself.

if you are going to take apart the tranny and fix it yourself then I would like to get some photos of the internals.

have you seen the inside of a tranny??

Do you know how many moving parts are in that thing??

I have the confidence to a lot of stuff but a tranny build is something I would definitely be scared to do.

Then again, what do you have to lose?

If I could watch someone tear one apart and rebuild it then I would have the knowledge and confidence to do it myself. Yeah, there probably is a lot of parts in there but from a few comments here and there that I've heard about Shepherd working on trannies makes me think it is really not as difficult as people think it is.

Just take lots of digital photos and keep track of the order of how you took it apart.

We got the tranny apart today and all appears relatively normal--a few worn areas, but nothing detrimental. However, the 1-2 synchronizer sleeve was stuck on the 1st gear synchronizer ring. I was able to free it up and it now will go to second gear perfectly fine. Once you try and slide the sleeve onto first, it gets stuck.

Like I said, all appears normal visually (at least to my untrained eye). The snychro doesn't appear to be out of the ordinary, but it's obviously getting hung up on something. Any ideas?

I'll probably be taking the snap ring off the end of the assembly tomorrow
to investigate further.

BTW This tranny stuff makes a lot more sense once you see how it works on the inside ;)

I think i would be more comfortable rebuilding a tranny than a head or bottom end. Everything just seems to go in a clear order. Im looking for the 1-2 gear assembly now...

mike fix this tranny as cheap as possible....then save for a AWD tranny
redo it and pull out the VC and get the diff welded...plug up the xfer output shaft and bingo...a stronger better geared tranny.

You might want to read this....here's some homework for ya...

Just to scare ya......

http://www.dsmtalk.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=73527

your most likey also gonna need...

1. gsx starter (not sure)
2. gsx flywheel (not sure)
3. gsx front axles (smaller then FWD one's, but better handleing, This HASNT been performed on a 2g yet.. so your the test rat...)
4. the tranny of course
5. the bolt's to bolt the AWD axle's up to the a/c bracket.

You can GET a VCE (VC Eliminator Kit - Mach V motorsports for 150$) OR a weld job on the Diff. You Can do both but theres no point... welding the diff send's a 50/50 power output to the front shafts, BUT... You can eliminate some rotating mass by using the VCE instead of the heavy VC. As a matter of fact, unless you weld the center diff with VCE installed, the odds of it fitting are rather slim (have fun putting the tranny in) and the hardened gears on the diff need a specific method to be welded properly or they will become brittle and crack... the VCE will stand up on the street, but if you are using it with a stock, 2 spider gear center diff, you can still brake the center diff... But there's guys using the Speed Design 4 spider gear center diff with no problems.

Keep your FWD tranny in there dude... :confused

And.. last but not least... you might just want to throw an LSD in that new FWD tranny your gonna get.... :thumb

If I find out anything else ill for sure post it....
